Response to Nakamura

September 22, 2009

In Nakamura’s essay,  she discusses different commercials and advertisements on television and the internet. she represented in all three ethos, pathos, and logos within the essay. The author wrote that lots of companies try to sell their product by making them look more better than the real one. The companies are influence and change how people think of things, they want people to think the products that company sells are necessary.

Response to “Letter From Birmingham Jail”

September 22, 2009

In Martin Luther King’s letter, he used the strong rhetorical appeals, which means pathos, logos, and ethos in his letter.

He wrote his letter with strong emotion, he described how civil disobedience is right in the face of unjust laws. He used images and tales of Hitler’s Germany. He talked about how it was “illegal”. He used strong words and sentences, like “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. There is an appeal to logos, such as “four basic steps for any nonviolent campaign”. He said “there have been more unsolved bombings of negro homes and churches in Birmingham than any city in this nation” . This appeals to people’s emotions and is a good example of pathos. He also mentions the painful experiences other blacks went through to appeal to emotion.

Place

My hall is located in the north side of the campus. The building is surrounded by lots of lush trees. The post office is in the same building, so standing beside the windows, you can see different kind of people, some are rushing around, and some are walking leisurely. Entering the front door of the hall, you can see a long corridor with a beautiful carpet on the floor. The left hand side is a meeting room with sofa and fireplace, few french windows makes the room very bright. The right hand side is same but there is a grand piano and a balcony with table’s and chairs in it, so people can see the grass and trees while they are studying or reading. It is very cozy.

I live with one of my Chinese friends. We have almost same habits and interests, so it is very easy to get along with her. Our dorm is on the second flour, and close to bathroom and kitchen.

I choose this place because for the international students, the dorm is our home in America, the most important place for our campus lives. I think a comfortable room and a good roommate is really important. Also, not only for international students, the dormitory is important for all students.

Reading Response for Kincaid

September 1, 2009

America and The United Kingdom has a pretty good relationship nowadays. From Afghanistan to Iraq, the two governments have always maintained a high degree of coordination on Anti-terrorism cooperation. However, in the past, some people in British colonies use to be slaves. They cannot have a good relationship with UK.

If I were written an essay like this, I may write about China, and I will focus on the history of China, because China has a very long history, a long history for accumulating civilization.

I like the first few sentences of this article. Kincaid use plenty of beautiful words and sentences express her love for The United Kingdom.

The word “place” usually means physical location for me, I never use “place” as cultural or social location, context, constructed over time and process. I don’t think it influences how I look at spaces around me after reading this article.

I like the passage that wrote the definition of “place” by Terry Jordon-Bychkov and Mona Domosh: “A term used to connote the subjective… unknowingly biased.” Because that is an interesting definition of “place” for me. I never thought this word has such deep meaning.

I speak dialect when I was in my hometown, because there are different dialects for every province in China, so almost everyone use dialects. I can speak a little bit Japanese because I’m interest in it. I can use body language to express idea to those not familiar with the language.

Reading Response to Asultany

August 27, 2009

How do your impressions of a person’s background influence your interactions with her or him?

Usually, a person’s background is an important aspect to me to charge him. I believe that the environment is one of the most important factors that will influence a person. Therefore, if one person’s background is similar to mine, we would have same topics, that will make me feel it will easier to get along with him.

How have others’ surface impressions of your background (ethnic, cultural, religious, educational, class, etc) influenced how they have treated you? Have you experience anything like what Asultany describes?

As international students, we have completely different culture from Americans. So, we will treat things differently. Language is another factor that may make Americans treats us differently, when international students came here first time, we cannot speak English very well, so sometimes, when we talk to native speakers, we cannot understand them. That may makes them don’t want talk to us again. I haven’t experience anything like what Asultany describes.

Why do you think people are so quick to categorize?

Most people are subjective when we met someone. We always follow our emotions. First impressions are strongest. Different cultures and educations make us easy to recognize people from other countries, so we can understand them easier. I think people always like to find someone else is similar to them.
